Is Colorado a good state for solar?

If you live in the beautiful state of Colorado, we have good news for you.

Colorado is one of the top states in the nation for going solar. It is ranked 13th in the nation according to SEIA, with enough solar installed to power 297,580 homes.

Why go solar in Colorado? Between all the sunny days and all the incentives Colorado offers for going solar, it’s easy to see why solar in the state of Colorado is a great investment.

In addition, electricity prices are on the rise with new decisions on time of use rates. As of 2020, electricity rates in Colorado will rise during peak times of the day. This helps encourage residents to consider sustainable options for energy.

It’s clear that Colorado cares about their mountains, lakes and forest with their emphasis on renewable sources of energy. In fact, Colorado was one of the first states to implement a renewable energy portfolio.

So, is Colorado a good state for solar? Absolutely.

Are solar panels worth it in Colorado?

Now that we know Colorado is a great state for solar, let’s go through the top reasons solar panels are worth it in Colorado.

Plenty of sunshine.

Colorado has close to 300 days of sunshine if you count partially sunny days (which still can be used by your solar PV system!). This means that in the sunniest cities of the centennial state, there is around 75% of sunshine yearly. Put that sunshine to work for you.

Offset your carbon footprint.

Help keep Colorado beautiful by switching to renewable energy. Renewable energy sources like solar produce no waste in the air, oceans or land, unlike harmful oil and gas. Many states have already passed renewable energy initiatives that include a transition to renewable energy fully by 2050. You can stay ahead of the curve and switch to solar before the federal tax credit goes away.

Solar technology advancements.

Solar technology has made huge advancements over the last few decades making it more reliable, affordable and enticing than ever to have installed. Whether it’s the new sleek black LG panels, or the Tesla Powerwall battery storage, you can be sure you’re getting the latest in solar technology with Sunpro Solar, which will give you peace of mind in your investment. And with the latest home energy monitoring technology, you’ll have the power of your home’s energy in your hands.

Reduce or eliminate your electricity bill.

Even though electricity prices in Nevada are right about at the national average, your bill living in Nevada will most likely be higher than the national averages due to higher than average energy consumption rates in Nevada. When you go solar you’ll be able to produce your own clean energy instead of using energy from your utility company’s grid. And with net metering in Nevada, you’ll be able to sell back any of your unused energy to the utility company for an even greater cut to your electric bills.

Take advantage of solar incentives and tax credits.

Colorado has state-wide solar programs that make the investment of going solar worthwhile. Take advantage of local utility rebates, the 22% federal tax credit and net metering. Curious what solar incentives are available to you? Let’s take a look at that in our next section.

Colorado Solar Panel Incentives, Rebates, & Tax Credits

Going solar in Colorado is well worth the investment: protect yourself from rising electricity bills, make use of the abundant sunshine, and preserve the environment.

There are also some pretty generous solar panel incentives for switching to clean energy in Colorado. These include the federal solar tax credit (which ends after 2022), state-wide net metering, and local and utility incentives. Installing solar panels to your home also helps increase its worth.

In this section, we’ll go over all the financial incentives for going solar in the state of Colorado, including:

Federal Solar Tax Credit
Colorado Net Metering
Colorado Solar Access Law
Colorado Solar Rebates
Solar and the Worth of Your Home in Colorado

Solar Federal Tax Credit

The best incentive for going solar is the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) offered by the United States federal government. This federal tax credit is available to Colorado homeowners and provides a 26% tax credit of the entire solar system cost, including a battery system.

To take advantage of the 26% federal income tax credit, you need to have your solar energy system installed before 2023.

Colorado Net Metering

One of the incentives for going solar in Colorado is through a program called net metering. Net metering allows you to sell any excess electricity produced by your solar panels back to your utility company. They will then credit your account for this energy, which reduces your monthly bill (or gives you a credit for future months). The rules for net metering are different depending on your utility company. In Colorado, the net metering policy was established in 2005 and in 2018 was expanded to also include a solar battery backup.

The Colorado net metering policy allows customers with solar panel installations to receive credits up to 120% of what their solar panels generate.

If your provider is Xcel Energy in Colorado, your monthly credits can be applied towards your next energy bill. Customers of Xcel can decide what to do with their credits at the beginning of their contract. Customers can choose whether they want the utility to reimburse you or to roll it over. Other utilities provide monthly bill monetary credits. For more information about net metering with Xcel, read their Solar Rewards FAQ.

Colorado Solar Access Law

More good news if you live in Colorado: your Homeowners Association (HOA) can’t prevent you from adding solar panels to your home. If you’re subject to an HOA, you don’t have to worry because the law clearly states that home improvements that lead to producing renewable energy cannot be restricted. This is according to Colorado Revised Statute (CRS) 38-30-168 which states:

“A covenant, restriction, or condition, contained in any deed, contract, security instrument, or other instrument affecting the transfer or sale of, or any interest in, real property that effectively prohibits or restricts the installation or use of a renewable energy generation device is void and unenforceable.”

In basic terms? Your HOA can’t stop you from having solar panels installed on your home. Of course there are some restrictions, so be sure to consult a lawyer if you have any questions about this or need further advice.

Colorado Solar Rebates

Colorado has some great solar rebates, depending on your utility company and where you live. Here are a couple of examples, but be on the lookout for more in your area, and it never hurts to ask your local utility company if they offer any additional incentives for going solar.

EnergySmart Colorado offers rebates between $400 and $3000 to residents in Eagle Valley, Roaring Fork Valley and Summit County. Holy Cross Energy also offers a rebate of $750 for the first 6kW of their system, and on average comes out to around $4,500 for a 6000kW system.

Does Colorado have a solar tax credit?

In the state of Colorado, there is no sales tax on solar panels according to the Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Equipment. In addition, the Property Tax Exemption for Residential Renewable Energy Equipment keeps you from having to pay any additional taxes on the increased value of your house.

solar panels coloradoDo solar panels increase home value in Colorado?

Not only do solar panels save you money, they also add value to your home.

Even the experts agree! In a comprehensive report done by the  US Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), they found out having solar panels installed to your home helps sell your home faster and get more money for it!

On average, solar panels add $20 of value for every $1 you save on your electric bill. So if you saved $200 a month on your electric bill with solar panels, you’d have an additional $4,000 of value added to your home.

And again in 2015 the Department of Energy and Berkeley Laboratory confirmed these findings with another study on the real estate market. After analyzing 22,000 homes, they found that homes with solar panels fetched a higher asking price than those without. About $4/watt, which comes out to be around $15,000 for residential, depending on your home and solar system.

In addition, solar panels can help your property spend less time on the market. In another study done by NREL, they found that solar properties earned about 17% more at closing, in addition to selling 20% faster.

Property Tax Exemption for Colorado Solar Panels

Home improvements or additions to your home in Colorado may often hike up the amount of your property tax. But not in Colorado! Solar panels in Colorado are completely property tax exempt. That means all the value without having to pay additional property taxes for the solar panels installed on your home. According to Colorado law, 100% of the assessed value of the solar system is exempt from the homeowner’s property taxes.

How much do solar panels cost in Colorado?

Assessing the cost of going solar can be overwhelming, between figuring out the size of your system, how much energy you need and any incentives available to you. To best understand the sticker price, these factors should be discussed with a qualified Solar Sales Specialist who can offer you an appropriate quote for your particular situation.

The good news for you is that Colorado is a prime state for solar incentives that help to offset the initial price tag. In addition, with high electricity bills in Colorado, your solar system will pay for itself at some point and then will start making you money.

What To Look For When Looking at Solar Companies in Colorado

  1. Expertise: Your solar installer should have expertise in the solar industry. Another bonus is experience in roofing. A company with expertise means they’ve been open for more than a few years and have thousands of installations under their belt.
  2. In-house team: Many companies subcontract their installation employees. Companies who have in house installers are much more reliable and experienced.
  3. Credentials: A reputable solar installation company will have all of the necessary licenses, insurance policies and credentials needed for all areas they operate in. They should be listed on their website and easy to find. A company with all credentials will meet all of the state standards and is certified as a legitimate business.
  4. Reputation: Reading solar company reviews is a great place to start. Keep an eye out for companies that respond to their customer reviews and respond in a professional and timely manner. Companies who care about their customers will be helpful and thankful to their customers. Another bonus is to look for a solar company that has won awards and been named in the top of their industry.
  5. Warranties: Warranties are a very important factor when considering solar installation companies. Many solar companies do not have reliable warranties. When buying an expensive system, you want to protect your investment with warranties and knowing you’re backed up by the company for years to come.
