New Orleans Solar Savings
As everyone knows, New Orleans has a tendency to be pretty hot in the summertime (and any other time, too). But all that heat does mean one good thing- sunlight. And that sunlight can be transformed into clean, pure, renewable energy with solar panels. And then that energy can help lower your electricity bills, letting you keep more of your savings. That’s especially appealing in the hot New Orlean’s summer when you have to run your air conditioner frequently. And not only does this help you save money, it helps keep the beautiful New Orleans rivers, bayous and forests clean.
There are several solar incentives for New Orleans’ homeowners to help make the switch to solar easy and affordable. These include:
- 30% Federal Solar Tax Credit
- Net Metering
- Home Energy Loan Program (HELP)
- Property Tax Exemption
- Solar Rights Act
- 24/7 Online Monitoring
With these programs in place to help you, affordable solar is within your reach. And Sunpro Solar is here to answer any questions you may have.
New Orleans Solar Tax Credits & Incentives
The solar tax credit is a federal government incentive. It is designed to encourage people to go solar, and helps with the upfront costs. It is also called the Investment Tax Credit. Both homeowners and business owners can take advantage of this federal incentive. If you do, you receive a tax credit worth 30% of the total cost of your solar power system.
To give you an idea of what this looks like, let’s say you buy a solar panel system. The total cost is $12,000. With this rebate, you can take 30% of that cost, and claim it as a tax credit. 30% of $12,000 is $3,600. That is a big deal! And even better, whatever amount you don’t use rolls over to the next year.
This tax credit has helped hundreds of New Orleans homeowners make the switch to solar energy. You can get up to a 30% tax credit through 2019. With this incentive, solar energy is affordable and sensible. And while the tax credit will still be available for the next several years, the credit amount will be slowly reduced. After 2019, the rate is reduced to 26%. That makes going solar in New Orleans soon very appealing. There has never been a better time to go solar for New Orleans residents.
Solar Net Metering for New Orleans Utility Companies
Net metering is a program that many utility companies offer to customers who have renewable energy systems, especially solar. When your roof produces extra energy than you consume, you can sell that energy back to your power company. Your account will then be credited for this surplus power. You can access these credits in times of stormy days or evening hours. These electric bill credits will help reduce your monthly bills, many times by a significant amount.
Like many other states, Louisiana offers Net Metering to residents and business owners who go solar. A lot of sunlight shines down on New Orleans every day. The amount of energy that you can produce from that can help you save a considerable amount.
Entergy is the largest energy utility company for the New Orleans area.
New Orleans Utility Company Entergy
Entergy has a net metering program in place for customers who have solar panels, or who wish to purchase solar panels. To qualify for Entergy’s net metering, there are certain requirements you must meet. But rest assured, we handle all the net metering procedures and requirements for you. Some of those requirements include:
- Paying for the cost of hooking your system up to the grid. We take care of this for you!
- Paying a one-time $100 charge for the net meter. We will reimburse you for this!
- Using Entergy approved equipment that can connect to Entergy’s electrical distribution grid.
- Having all permits required prior to installation. Our team handles all the permits!
- Ensuring that once connected to the grid, the system must stay connected.

The Louisiana Home Energy Loan Program (H.E.L.P.)
The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources offers a loan of up to $12,000 for energy efficient improvements. This fantastic program, abbreviated as H.E.L.P., is available to residents of New Orleans. The property in question must, of course, also be in Louisiana. To qualify for this loan, you have two options. You can either have a home energy rating done for your home, or you can choose a pre-approved improvement. If you don’t want to do the energy rating option, the pre-approved list of projects can be found here.
Solar Property Tax Exemption for New Orleans
When you install solar panels on your home, your New Orleans property value increases an average of $15,000. That’s great news for homeowners! Even better news- you don’t have to pay an additional property tax for the increased value!
In New Orleans, you are 100% property tax exempt from the value increase you’ll receive from your solar panel system. So let’s say you install the solar array, but in a few years you need to move. In that case you have that extra sellers power without the taxes. Plus, houses with solar tend to sell faster. That’s a win-win-win situation.
Solar Rights Act
Good news, New Orleans homeowners! If you’d like to install solar panels, your Homeowner’s Association cannot restrict you. Going solar in New Orleans is easier than ever- especially since you can install your solar panels without needing your HOA’s approval. Skipping this step saves you both time, and headaches.
However, if you live in an historic district, you will need special approval to install solar panels. But not to worry. Sunpro Solar has experience with this process, and knows the procedure to receive approval. Going solar in New Orleans, even in the Historic District, is a breeze with Sunpro Solar
There’s a lot of excellent reasons to go solar, but of course there’s lots of questions to ask, too.
