However, 2019 is the last year to receive the full 30%. Starting January 1st, 2020, it’s reduced to a 26% tax credit. That’s pretty good, but not as good as 30%. Act quickly if you want to use the full 30% Federal Solar Tax Credit for your Las Cruces solar panels.

1) the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, or

2) the Build Green New Mexico rating system.

ENERGY STAR manufactured homes are also eligible for this tax credit.

Net Metering for Las Cruces Solar Panels

For those who want to get the most out of their Las Cruces solar panel systems, look into net metering. With this program, excess energy produced by your solar panels will be sent to your utility grid. Your utility company will then credit your account with the amount they produced, giving you an even lower electric bill.

El Paso Electric currently provides electricity to the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico. It also offers net metering to customers who have installed solar panels. They have three different tiers for interconnection depending upon the size of the solar panel system in question.

  • The system owner must sign the Simplified Interconnection Application.

  • They must also submit all required documentation for approval.

  • Approval for interconnection must be given prior to the installation of the solar panel system.

Systems of greater than 10kW, and less than 100 kW.

  • The system owner must complete and submit all required documents in the application package.

  • This includes the Standard Interconnection Application, and the Standard Interconnection Agreement.

  • Approval for interconnection must be given prior to installation of the solar panel system.

Systems of greater than 100 kW, and up to 10 MW.

  • The system owner must complete all required documentation, including state-required documentation.

  • They must also complete the Interconnection Agreement for Generating Facilities with Rated Capacity No Greater Than 100 MW and Not Qualified for Simplified Interconnection.

  • Approval for interconnection must be given prior to installation of the solar panel system.

  • The solar panel system may NOT be activated until all processes for approval have been completed, and any necessary changes have been made.

Las Cruces, New Mexico Solar RECs

RECs, which is short for Renewable Energy Certificates, are becoming more common throughout the US. An REC is given to the owner of a solar panel system owner when their system produces 1 MWh. Utility companies will then purchase these RECs from you. These RECs will be used to show that the company is complying with state mandates on required renewable energy generation.

Currently, El Paso Electric will purchase RECs from their customers at the prevailing market prices. It is also based on the Tier price that was in effect that the time the REC Application was received. You can read more about their REC policies here.

Property Tax Exemption for Las Cruces Solar Panels
