The state of New Mexico has exciting news that has been featured by news outlets around the country informing Americans that the state has pledged to go 100% renewable by 2050. The New Mexico solar industry, along with other renewable energy industries in New Mexico, welcomed this news. And those efforts to be 100% carbon-neutral have already begun in New Mexico. This is good news for the entire southwest!
The General Services Department of New Mexico (GSD for short) has announced that it is planning to implement a project that will make all government buildings in Santa Fe energy efficient. Part of this will include adding solar panels in Santa Fe to 19 government buildings, as well as installing the New Mexico state government’s first battery storage unit in Santa Fe. This brings sustainability to New Mexico now that solar energy can be captured and stored for future use. The contractor hired to implement these energy efficient upgrades has guaranteed savings of up to $1.1 million each year.
The total cost for the energy efficiency upgrades, including solar panels for Santa Fe government buildings, is estimated to be $32 million. The New Mexico Legislature authorized $20 million to be used towards this project, and the remaining $12 is expected to be financed by New Mexico Finance Authority.
New Mexico is stepping up their game and this initiative includes buying electric cars for state workers and building charging stations for government buildings in Santa Fe. How cool is that for government employees?
Sarah Cottrell Propst, the Cabinet Secretary for the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) stated “The green energy initiative will go a long way in making our government facilities more energy efficient and saving our state money. It’s a win-win that has the full support of EMNRD.” GSD Cabinet Secretary Ken Ortiz stated “I want to thank Governor Lujan-Grisham for initiating the executive order to move New Mexico forward to a clean energy, sustainable future. It is our responsibility to ensure we are incorporating energy-efficiency measures to benefit future generations.”
