The Big Easy is 13th for Solar Power in the Nation

New Orleans 13 Nation for Solar

Great news, New Orleans solar lovers! Thanks to the growing popularity of New Orleans solar energy, the city is now ranked 13th in the nation for solar energy capacity per capita. This fantastic news was released by the Environment of America Research & Policy Center (Environment America for short). The study was from their sixth edition of Shining Cities: the Top U.S. Cities for Solar Energy.

According to Bret Fanshaw, the campaign director, “The Big Easy can… be known as one of America’s ‘Solar Stars’. New Orleans’ use of solar energy sets an example for the rest of the country.” In fact, the study showed that New Orleans was even ahead of cities such as Los Angeles, Austin, and Sacramento. These are all cities that are known for their solar-friendly policies.

This is due in no small part to the hard work of the New Orleans City Council. They, along with other organizations, have been working to promote renewable energy systems in New Orleans, solar panels being one of them. One noticeable project is the community solar program, implemented last year. This program was specifically designed to make solar panel systems and solar energy available to renters, and low-income homeowners. Thanks to these efforts, the New Orleans solar industry has been busy making the Crescent City green.

And that’s not the only good news Environment America had. According to them, between 2013 and 2018, the solar energy capacity in 45 of America’s 57 largest cities doubled. The U.S. now has over 60 GW of solar power capacity installed in total. That’s enough to power about 1 in every 11 homes in the nation.

We at Sunpro Solar are thrilled to see this news. We’ve always known that New Orleans and solar panels are a perfect combination, and clearly others are starting to catch on as well. With all the sunshine we get, it’s no wonder why so many people in the Crescent City are switching to solar power. We can’t wait to see what the report says next year; our goal is to get New Orleans to Number 1!
