Another Big Utility is Using Orlando Solar Energy to Power Homes

Utility Company in Orlando using Solar Energy to Power Homes

Florida is known as the Sunshine State for a reason. It gets tons of sunshine every day, which is a resource that lots of people- residents and companies alike- are taking advantage of. The Orlando Utility Commission (abbreviated as OUC), which provides both water and electricity to the greater Orlando, Florida area, is one such company. OUC is making a big investment into green, renewable Orlando solar energy.

They have recently decided to add 149 MW of electricity to their portfolio, generated entirely by clean Orlando solar energy. This solar power would be generated by two seperate Orlando solar farms, each generating half of the electricity. Both solar farms would be roughly 500 acres in size, and together will produce enough Orlando solar energy to power 27,000 homes. It is expected that when completed, the arrays will come online in 2022, and 2023.

According to Linda Ferrone, OUC’s chief customer officer, “This will actually put OUC as the number one utility in Florida on a solar-watts per customer basis.”

In addition, OUC plans to also test battery storage. The utility company plans to install 10 MW of battery storage capacity along with the Orlando solar energy farms. This will maximize the energy capture from the solar panels, and will provide backup energy when there is cloud cover. This will help Orlando residents to save money on their electric bill, and keep the environment pristine. Clint Bullock, OUC’s general manager and CEO, is looking forward to the expansion. “As Orlando has grown and transformed over the years, so has OUC. And now, OUC is powering the rapid growth of our community with clean, renewable energy and innovative storage technologies.”

The company is also planning to harness Orlando solar energy with a 108.5 MW solar facility scheduled to come online in 2020. These actions to use clean, renewable energy are admirable, and with any luck, other utility companies will take the Orlando Utility Commission’s actions to heart. The Sunshine State can always be a little sunnier, and Sunpro Solar is eager to help residents get there. If you’d like to know more about how you can save with solar, just give us a call!
