Going solar in Chicago
When it comes to renewable energy, you’d think Chicago, the Windy City, would be a great place for wind energy. But did you know it’s actually a great place for solar energy as well? You may be wondering why people in your neighborhood are choosing to install solar panels on their home, and we’re here to help you understand it all. Let’s start with all the reasons going solar is a great investment, and then we’ll dive into all the ways switching to solar is more affordable and easier than you think.
Are Solar Panels Worth It in Chicago?
If you live in Chicago, Illinois, one thing you may not be aware of is that electricity costs are actually 5.8 percent more than the nationwide average cost. This adds up over time, making Illinois residents a great candidate for solar energy alternatives. Illinois also has the nation’s 17th highest electricity prices. And in 2019, energy prices rose to the highest level in four years. Switching to solar energy stops you from relying so heavily on your utility company, and can reduce or eliminate your monthly bill regardless of their energy price hikes in the future. For this reason alone, switching to solar energy can be a worthwhile investment. Talk to a Solar Sales Specialist to go over the specifics of your situation to see how solar panels are worth the investment on your home in Chicago.

Does solar make sense in Chicago?
Switching to solar energy in any city makes sense due to the numerous benefits it provides. Not only will you produce your own clean energy which reduces your carbon footprint, but you can also save on the amount of electricity you pull from your utility company. This reduces your monthly electric bill and makes you less dependent on the utility company in the future. If you finance your solar panel investment, you’ll have a monthly payment but your electric bill is likely to be dramatically less. And when your solar system is paid off, you’ll be producing your own energy free of the utility company rising prices. As more people switch to renewable forms of energy and we start to run out of our current sources of energy like coal and oil, electricity prices will go up. Don’t get left behind!
How effective will it be to put solar panels on my house in Chicago?
You may think since Chicago doesn’t get as much sunshine as other cities it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have solar panels installed. The fact is that solar panels still work on cloudy or rainy days. Depending on your solar panels (make sure to purchase high quality ones like LG), you may not need more sunshine to produce the amount of energy you use in your home.
Not to mention a recent study claims that having solar panels installed on your home in Chicago is well worth it. In fact, Redfin named Chicago No. 2 on its list of Midwestern cities with solar power potential.Free Solar Quote
Chicago solar rebates and tax incentives
There are several incentives available for going solar if you live in Illinois. In addition to Sunpro Solar’s 25 year labor warranty and production guarantees, there are also great federal, state and local incentives for going solar, including:
Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
One of the best ways to get your solar panels is to take advantage of the 26% Federal Solar tax credit. Because the federal government knows just how important renewable energy is, they’ve implemented this incentive to encourage people to switch to solar. By taking advantage of this incentive, you can get 26% of the total cost of your solar panels back in tax credits, including the cost of installation.
However, this great tax credit won’t last forever. Starting January 1st 2023, the tax credit is reduced to 22%. And in 2024, it will be unavailable altogether for residential solar panels. So be sure to move fast so you can get your Illinois solar panel system for the best deal!
Solar homeowners property tax break
Whenever you improve your home, it often means that your home value increases. This is a great perk, even though you have to pay increased property taxes. However, you don’t need to worry about that when you install solar panels. Thanks to the Illinois government, solar panels are completely property tax exempt. So you can enjoy all the added value your new solar panel system brings without paying any extra taxes.
Net metering in Illinois
Another way to capitalize on your solar panels is with net metering. Any excess solar power that your panels produce is sent to your utility grid. Your utility company will then credit your account with that extra energy, which will further lower your monthly bill.
In the Chicago area, ComEd offers net metering to their customers for systems up to 2,000kW (AC-rated) in size. In addition, any unused credits at the end of the month roll over, and are automatically applied to your next bill. Solar energy systems of ComEd customers who want to participate in net metering are limited in capacity size so that they generate no more than 110% of the customer’s prior 12 months of electricity usage.
Illinois Solar Renewable Energy Credits
If you live in Chicago, Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SREC) are available to you after going solar. This state incentive has a value equal to the solar energy you produce over 15 years times the price set by the Illinois Power Agency for REC’s. For your rooftop PV system, the value is 7.1 cents/kWh produced, which is paid in year one. This incentive is available through ComEd for the Chicago area.
How much do solar panels cost in Chicago?
How much does it cost to go solar in Chicago? The cost of solar depends on a lot of factors besides the sticker price of the unit including the size of your home, your particular energy needs, how much sunlight exposure your home gets and incentives that offset the cost of the system. To best understand the sticker price, these factors should be discussed with a qualified Solar Sales Specialist who can offer you an appropriate quote for your particular situation.Free Solar Quote
