The Arkansas solar industry has had a lot of exciting things going on recently. The Natural State is living up to its name more and more every day, and people interested in renewable energy like solar power have plenty to be happy about. 2019 was a very exciting year for the Arkansas solar industry, and it shows no signs of slowing down. That’s especially true for Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Fayetteville has a goal of all city facilities being 100% green by 2030. And they’re well over halfway there already. The city not only utilizes power purchase agreements, but also installed several solar panel systems. All of this will not only help keep the environment healthy but will also save the city several million dollars a year in operating costs.
Peter Nierengarten, Fayetteville’s environmental director, is very pleased with the project. “In total, those plants use about 66% of the total electricity consumed by the city of Fayetteville government operations.” It also saves Fayetteville money because the city purchases the solar power at a lower rate than what it paid for from the utility. “It just made really good economic sense for us,” Nierengaten said. “It made good energy sense for us. It made good political sense for us.”
He also encouraged other cities to look into renewable energy sources like solar panels. “It’s not that difficult,” he said. “The price of renewables, particularly solar, has come way down. These types of projects are very accessible and… with the right partner, very doable.”
This is a fantastic example for other cities in Arkansas. With Fayetteville’s great success, other city governments will hopefully consider utilizing solar power as well. Installing solar panels isn’t just great for homeowners- it’s good for everyone. This pro-solar attitude has helped the Arkansas solar industry grow steadily every year. The great long-term savings that solar panels bring are appealing to everyone. And with the cost going down every year, it’s becoming a popular and common investment in Arkansas.
And it isn’t just the Arkansas solar industry that’s moving and shaking. The U.S. Energy Information Administration is still compiling it’s reports from 2019, but so far it seems like renewable energy industries did very well last year. In April alone, renewable energy generation like solar power grew 23% nationally. The Arkansas solar industry had a busy time last year too, with 118 MW of solar generation installed. And that number is expected to grow even more in the coming year.
Solar energy is quickly overtaking traditional fossil fuels, not just in the U.S., but worldwide. The growth that Arkansas is experiencing is par for the course- and Arkansas solar advocates couldn’t be more thrilled.
